Outspoken Democrat donor and leftist activist Rob Reiner said he’s ready for President Joe Biden to step aside.
The 77-year-old actor and filmmaker shared his thoughts in an X post on Sunday afternoon. “It’s time to stop f***ing around. If the Convicted Felon wins, we lose our Democracy. Joe Biden has effectively served US with honor, decency, and dignity. It’s time for Joe Biden to step down,” he wrote.
Reiner did not specify if he wants Biden to resign immediately or to end his bid for re-election.
This course reversal comes after the Hollywood activist spent years championing Biden as an excellent president and hosting fundraisers to help his campaign. “Screw politics. Screw poll numbers. Joe Biden has a record of accomplishments in the first two years of his Presidency that has gone unmatched for almost 60 years,” Reiner tweeted in 2022.
The change seems to stem from Biden’s abysmal debate performance last month. According to a CNN report, the Hollywood director attended a watch party in Los Angeles and was “screaming about losing” while fellow leftist Jane Fonda “had tears in her eyes.”
Even so, Reiner posted on June 28 that he was still in Biden’s corner. “Last night’s debate was a disaster for President Biden. But the choice is still crystal clear: We either can choose a good decent man who cares about his fellow citizens and knows how to govern, or a Convicted Felon who will destroy our Democracy. Not a tough choice.”
Reiner is perhaps best known for his role as Mike Stivic in the classic sitcom All in the Family. Throughout the series, Reiner’s character was called “meathead” by his father-in-law, Archie Bunker.
Many Hollywood donors have also abandoned the campaign, vowing to stop sending money to the Democrats if Biden refuses to withdraw from the race.
“With all the text chains I’m on, people are basically like, ‘If he doesn’t drop out, we’re not giving any more money to Democrats or the Democratic Party.’ It’s like super intense,” one donor told Variety shortly after the disastrous debate.
As of this morning, Biden sent a letter to Democratic lawmakers reasserting that he is “firmly committed to staying in this race.”
