House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) wrote a letter to Republican House members on Monday informing them that there will be a vote to remove Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from her position as Conference Chair because change is “need[ed]” since Cheney, who is in charge of the party’s messaging, is focused on “relitigating the past.”
In the letter, obtained by The Daily Wire, McCarthy says that he is humbled and honored to lead Republican House members and that those in leadership need to put the interests of the team above their own interests.
“Just as we serve at the will of our constituents, this leadership team should exist to serve you, not the other way around,” McCarthy said. “It had been my hope that our driving focus would be taking back the House in 2022 and implementing our Commitment to America. Despite the mainstream media working overtime against us, I believe we still have a great chance to do so. Unfortunately, each day spent relitigating the past is one day less we have to seize the future.”
“This is no time to take our eye off the ball. If we are to succeed in stopping the radical Democrat agenda from destroying our country, these internal conflicts need to be resolved so as to not detract from the efforts of our collective team,” McCarthy continued. “Having heard from so many of you in recent days, it’s clear that we need to make a change. As such, you should anticipate a vote on recalling the Conference Chair this Wednesday.”
McCarthy’s statement comes after news broke over the weekend that a vote would be scheduled for Wednesday morning to vote on Cheney’s leadership position and that Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) is expected to initiate the call to remove Cheney.
“We are a big tent party,” McCarthy’s letter concluded. “We represent Americans of all backgrounds and continue to grow our movement by the day. And unlike the left, we embrace free thought and debate. All members are elected to represent their constituents as they see fit, but our leadership team cannot afford to be distracted from the important work we were elected to do and the shared goals we hope to achieve. The stakes are too high to come up short. I trust you agree. Thank you for your attention to this matter and your service to our nation.”
Democrats, the media, and the few allies that Cheney has have sought to portray attempts to remove her from leadership as being a result of her refusing to lie about the events of January 6 and other matters related to the 2020 presidential election.
However, numerous top Republicans that The Daily Wire has spoken to have made clear that this is not the reason that they have grown increasingly frustrated with Cheney continuing to hold the party’s No. 3 leadership spot. They are angry that Cheney continues to focus on an issue that is dividing Republicans rather than focus on the damage that President Joe Biden and the Democrats are doing to the U.S.
