Michigan Republican Rep. Pete Meijer slams his OWN party for being 'treacherous snakes' who are 'salivating over civil war' after voting against the riot commission

Republican Rep. Pete Meijer appeared to condemn members of his own party as 'treacherous snakes' in a Memorial Day message that accused them of 'salivating for civil war.'

Meijer, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and as a conflict analyst in Afghanistan, voted to impeach President Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and his latest broadside followed calls by some Trump supporters to secede from the United States.

'I struggle with Memorial Day,' he wrote in the first of string of tweets that criticized the 'holier than thous' deploying 'hot takes.'

'And then there are those who take this sacrifice for granted, waxing patriotic while salivating for civil war.

'Claiming they need to destroy the Republic in order to save it in the ultimate betrayal of oaths sworn. Those treacherous snakes can go straight to hell.'

Meijer was among those urging Republican Senators to back a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 violence.

He said rejection would set back the aim of healing party divisions.

'A lot of folks might dismiss [the inquiry] as a product of the swamp, as tainted in one way, shape or form, but it would be the closest we could get to something that may be factual, that may clear away some of the fantasies, some of the fictions surrounding January 6 and the events preceding it,' he told CNN last month.

In the wake of the attack, he said he was altering his routine and thinking about buying body armor for his protection.

'I have colleagues who are now traveling with armed escorts out of fear for their safety. Many of us are altering routines,' he told MSNBC at the time.

'I'm working to get body armor, which is a reimbursable purchase that we can make.'

His latest comments come amid continuing fall-out from Jan. 6 and as former President Trump continues to exert a tight hold over the party.

House Republicans dumped Liz Cheney out of her leadership position last month because of her continuing criticism of Trump.

And for every attack by the likes of former House Speaker Paul Ryan - who last week said: 'If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality, or on second-rate imitations, then we're not going anywhere' - there is a string of Trump loyalists ready to punch back.

But Meijer 33-year-old congressman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, may have been targeting someone close to home with his tweets.

Michigan Republican Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock played with the idea of Michigan seceding in a Facebook post that showed her posing for a photograph with Brexit leader Nigel Farage.

'Maybe it's time for a #MIexit,' she wrote, describing Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer - a favorite target of Trump supporters - as 'tyrannical.'
