The Crying News Network strikes again: CNN host Alisyn Camerota chokes up on live TV over CDC news that Americans can finally ditch the masks

CNN host Alisyn Camerota teared up live on air after the CDC revealed that vaccinated people no longer have to wear masks, saying: 'It feels a little bit like it's over'.

The emotional reaction came after the CDC's Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky issued new guidance on Thursday that Americans can finally stop wearing masks indoors and outdoors.

Speaking to CNN's Dr Sanjay Gupta, Camerota - who was joined by co-host Victor Blackwell - said she wanted to 'take a moment' after the announcement as she reminisced on how, at one point, they didn't know if they would survive.

'I found myself welling up when Dr Walensky was talking,' she said.

'You and I talked every morning during the past year about how many more Americans were going to die, what's going to happen, were we going to make it to the vaccine, were we all going to survive.'

Camerota went on to say that '580,000 Americans didn't make it to this day.'

She then held up her mask, saying: 'This day where they said we can throw these away that we've all been clinging to.

'We just didn't know when this day would come. It feels a little bit like it's over, doesn't it?'

Dr Gupta then chimed in, saying: 'It's a really important day.

Soon after the CDC's announcement, President Biden and Vice President Harris appeared without masks, for the first time, for a press conference

'As hard as it was to do the science-based things at the beginning, we should not make the mistake of stopping doing things that are no longer necessary.

'We've got to follow the science, whatever direction it takes us.'

Their segment came after the announcement from the CDC, which prompted President Biden - along with several lawmakers meeting him to discuss infrastructure in the Oval Office - stripping off their masks.

Camerota's CNN segment comes just one day after CNN president Jeff Zucker defended the network's anchors for voicing their opinions and showing emotions as 'authentic' and 'real'.

'One of the things that I've tried to encourage is authenticity and being real,' he told the Washington Post. 'If we pretend not to be human, it's not real.'

In the past year, CNN a number of CNN hosts and reporters have cried on air, including Sara Sidner and Brianna Keilar, who both teared up while covering the pandemic.

Sidner apologized to viewers after becoming emotional while reporting on COVID-19 deaths.

The CNN boss addressed the Sidner situation directly, saying: 'What I told her [Sidner] was, 'Don't ever apologize like that again. She was just being real. She's a human being. She was expressing an emotion that probably many people in the audience were feeling.

'And I'm totally comfortable with that happening on television. What people react to is authenticity and reality.'

Zucker admitted that there have been times when he has had to call anchors to tell them their coverage 'might have been a little too much'.

It is not known what examples Zucker is referring to but Anderson Cooper was forced to apologize after comparing Trump to 'an obese turtle on his back, flailing in the hot sun, realizing his time is over'.

And Chris Cuomo is now prohibited from speaking with his New York governor brother Andrew on air after the latter was accused of sexual harassment and a cover up of COVID deaths in nursing homes.

Former CNN anchor Carol Costello said Dana Bash, the anchor who described the first presidential debate of 2020 a 's*** show', may well have faced disciplinary action for those words in the past.
