Tuesday, just minutes and miles apart, two southeast Columbus teens were killed and one wounded in separate incidents. While the nation’s attention is focused on the deadly police shooting of knife wielding Black teen girl Ma’Khia Bryant as she charged to stab another Black teen girl, a deadly gun battle between two 15-year-old boys played out that has received precious little attention.

The first 911 call in the Bryant incident took place at 4:32 p.m. The call for the teen gun battle was received forty minutes prior at 3:52 p.m.

As noted in the police report, Columbus has recorded 62 homicides in less than fourth months in 2021. Columbus has a population of about 900,000 people. A homicide record of 175 victims was set in Columbus in 2020. The city is on pace to match or exceed that record this year.

On December 4, 2020, Casey Goodson, Jr. was shot five times in the back while entering his grandmother’s house by a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy (Columbus is located within Franklin County) who pursued Goodson after reportedly seeing Goodson wave a gun at him while driving. AP excerpt from March 18, 2021:

…The shooting took place in Columbus on Dec. 4 while Meade, a 17-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was finishing up an unsuccessful search for a fugitive as part of a U.S. Marshals Office fugitive task force.

U.S. Marshal Peter Tobin has said that on the day of the shooting, Meade confronted the victim outside his home after Goodson, who was not the subject of the fugitive search, drove by and waved a gun at Meade.

One witness heard Meade command the victim to drop his gun, and when he didn’t, the deputy shot him, Tobin said after the shooting. The family has said Goodson had a sandwich, not a gun, in his hand.

Even if Goodson had been carrying a gun, the family reiterated, he had a license to do so.

Officials said that a gun was recovered from the scene but have not provided further details.

“My grandson just got shot in the back when he came in the house,” Goodson’s grandmother told a dispatcher shortly after, according to 911 recordings obtained by The Associated Press. “I don’t know if he’s OK.”

Three weeks ago, a 14-year-old boy was arrested for carjacking a pregnant woman in southeast Columbus.
