Twisted George-Floyd themed proposal by Nevada student saying 'if you went to the dance with me it would take my breath away' sparks outrage

A Nevada school district is investigating a teenage girl who used the death of George Floyd as the theme for her Sadie Hawkins dance invitation.

The student is seen in a now viral image, posing with a large handwritten poster bearing the message: 'If you went to SADIES w/me it would take my BREATH away!'

The poster also included Floyd's name and a drawing of the man, who was killed in Minneapolis in May 2020 after police kneeled on his neck, cutting off his airways.

The highschooler has not yet been identified.

The image sparked outrage on social media with one Twitter user writing: 'How dare you joke about someone's death'.

'The white privilege in this picture is LOUD, girl c'mon,' another wrote on Instagram.

Many have claimed to have identified the girl and urged people to contact her principal to complain about the 'disgusting image'.

'Let them know this is completely unacceptable and disciplinary action should be taken,' one Facebook user wrote.

Foothill High School in Henderson and the Clark County School District said they are 'aware of the matter and are currently investigating'.

'Foothill and CCSD will not tolerate racially insensitive behaviors that contradict an inclusive community and impact the school culture of our students,' a joint statement posted to the school's website on Friday said.

'As you are aware, Foothill High School and CCSD can not comment on individual student matters or discipline, we assure you the issue is being addressed.

'It's not known what type of discipline the student could face.'

Foothill Principal Lisa Burkhead told school members on Monday that she was planning 'several virtual student town hall forums to listen to students impacted by recent events,' The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

It is not clear where or when the picture was taken, though the paper said it appeared to show students on an athletic field.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Foothill High School has not held dances this school year as all district schools have been doing distance learning amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The student's dance invitation has drawn comparisons to an incident last week in which a Valentine's Day-themed image of Floyd was circulated through the Los Angeles Police Department. The Valentine's image had the caption 'You take my breath away'.

Floyd was heard repeatedly telling officers he could not breathe before his death.

The LAPD have announced an internal investigation into the matter.

A trial is set to begin next month for former Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin, who is charged with second-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter over Floyd's killing.

Trials for three other officers present on the scene are expected to take place later this year.
