This is Kelly's first interview of a First Lady, though the daytime talk show is only in hits second season, having premiered on September 9, 2019 to replace Steve Harvey's eponymous talk.

But her show was immediately a massive hit, quickly becoming the most watched new daytime talk show in seven years.

In addition to airing across the US, it also airs on other networks in Canada, Norway, and New Zealand, and has already been renewed for a third and fourth season.

It won three Daytime Emmys in 2020, including Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host for Clarkson, and has been nominated for a Critic's Choice Award two years in a row.

In December, the show's ratings were so high that they tied with the Ellen DeGeneres for third place in talk shows, according to TV News Check, behind only Live with Kelly and Ryan and Dr. Phil.

In fact, Page Six even reported last month that Kelly's show could take Ellen's 3 p.m. time slot.

While Kelly didn't explicitly endorse President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, she has shared her political opinion in the past, including her distasted for Donald Trump.

In 2016, when fellow musician Bette Midler tweeted, 'How can we live with a POTUS for four years who says things like "I could walk down Fifth Ave., shoot someone, and still not lose any votes?' — Kelly responded, 'I am legitimately frightened for our nation.'

Overall, though, her public political opinions have been quite mixed. Hailing from a red county near Fort Worth, Texas, she said ahead of the 2012 election: 'I’m probably going to vote for Obama again, even though I’m a Republican at heart.'

She told the Daily Star that she couldn't vote for Mitt Romney because of his stance against marriage equality, saying: 'I have a lot of gay friends and I don't think it's fair they can't get married.'

She also sang at former President Barack Obama's inauguration and performed on the Michelle Obama song 'This Is for My Girls.'

However, she also voiced support for Former U.S. Representative for Texas Ron Paul in 2012, tweeting that she 'loves' the Libertarian politician.

'I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance,' she said. 'If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.'

As for the First Lady, sitting down with the season one American Idol winner strikes a slightly different tone than Melania Trump did when she gave her first solo interview to MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski on February 24, 2017 — though they both chose female interviewers for the occasion.

Speaking to Mika four years ago, Melania said, 'Do I agree with him all the time? No. I tell him my opinions, sometimes he listen sometimes he don't.

She also insisted at the time that he treats both sexes the same.

'I see him in life, he treats women the same as men. He will tell you what is in his heart, what he thinks. He will not hold it back if you’re a woman, you’re human. If you’re a woman or a man, it’s no different, you’re human,' she said.

While Jill hasn't granted a solo interview yet, she has done solo projects since her husband was sworn in.

Earlier this month, she enlisted two canine aides to help her encourage Americans to mask up amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In a PSA that features the family's beloved German Shepherds Champ and Major, the 69-year-old professor urged her fellow pet owners to protect themselves against COVID-19 by wearing a face covering, insisting that they 'owe it' to their pets to stay healthy.

The PSA aired during the 17th annual Puppy Bowl.

'For a lot of us during this pandemic, our pets have been such a source of joy and comfort, and maybe a bark or two on the video conference,' she said.

'The unconditional love from a dog is one of the most beautiful things on earth — and we owe it to them to keep ourselves healthy,' she said. 'So please keep wearing your mask, even when you're out walking your dog.'
