Even if you believe all of this, Foxx recused herself over apparent conflicts of interest, prompting CPD demands for a federal probe into her. For her to effectively un-recuse and make this call (blindsiding cops) isn’t going to tamp down the corruption angle.

You can say it's 'corrupt', you can make whatever political hay of it you will, but it's a blunt cost/benefit analysis from where I sit, even though I personally think Smollett is a punk. The city/county's interests are not yours, sitting over somewhere else in the world.

What is unclear to me, and maybe someone can help me out, is why, if Smollett is cleared of all charges, the city keeps $10,000 of his money, if he is publicly maintaining his innocence. If this was part of a deal, wouldn't he have to admit some level of guilt?

What was also noteworthy about this news conference with Chicago police was that Johnson also said Smollett was responsible for the threat letter sent to Fox studios in Chicago. That’s an FBI case still on going.
