READ IT: David Mamet Pens Letter On Felicity Huffman Bribery Scandal: Her Zeal Overcame Her ‘Better Judgement’

Hollywood titan David Mamet, the writer of such classics as "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "The Untouchables," has written an open letter in which he showed sympathy for actress Felicity Huffman in light of her being charged in a massive college bribery admissions scandal that also includes "Full House" actress Lori Loughlin.

Mamet released his open letter to various media outlets on Tuesday. In the letter, he praised Huffman for being a good friend that was overcome by "zeal for her children's future." He likewise praised her husband, William H. Macy, whom he has worked with for 50 years.

I’ve known and worked with Bill Macy for nearly fifty years. We started two theatrecompanies together, one of which, THE ATLANTIC is still in operation in New York, after 35 years.

I’ve known Felicity Huffman for those 35 years, she was my student, my colleague, worked in many of my films, and created roles on stage in three of my plays. I’m crazy about them both.

That a parent’s zeal for her children’s future may have overcome her better judgment for a moment is not only unfortunate, it is, I know we parents would agree, a universal phenomenon.

As noted by Variety, Mamet has a long history with both Macy and Huffman going back several decades. Huffman starred in Mamet's Broadway play "Speed the Plow" in 1988 before starring in several others throughout both the 1990s and 2000s. William H. Macy has not been charged with Huffman's alleged crimes. He has worked on over eight films with David Mamet.

NBC News reports that the bust, code-named "Operation Varsity Blues," netted parents, school administrators, coaches at both the high school and college levels, and standardized test administrators, who engaged in the practices of "getting students admitted to elite universities as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities, and helping potential students cheat on their college exams."

Mamet also states that he has worked for many years around America's elite universities, declaring that their admissions processes are a "corrupt joke," blasting them for having racist policies that have discriminated against Asians and Jews.

"I worked for very many years in and around our Elite Universities. I am able to report that their admissions policies are an unfortunate and corrupt joke," Mamet said in his letter. "Harvard was once sued for restricting the admission of qualified Jews; a contest currently being waged by Asians."​

The unqualified may be accepted for many reasons, among them, as Legacies, and on account of large donations made by their parents. I do not see the difference between getting a kid into school by bribing the Building Committee, and by bribing someone else. But, apparently, the second is against the Law. So be it.
