I’m not gonna deny that Toto’s Africa is a classic. Released in 1982, it was a monster hit that’s been sampled and covered for nearly 40 years, and it’s got a sick chorus that you need to really belt out. As far as songs from the 80’s that never go out of style, this one really slaps.
The story in the song, according to the band themselves, is a song about Africa, written by a guy who’s never been there, but loves the idea of it. I mean sure, yeah, I guess… that makes sense.
But, that’s not really what’s going on. In fact, I think only Twitter user @hradzkaknows the truth.

Early last year, @hradska (a.k.a David Hines) dropped this Twitter threadsuggesting that there’s a sinister and supernatural truth behind the song.
Sure, there’s some love involved too, but also a dark curse.

Explains why the lead singer’s in a library, looking up books about Africa.

Found one.

Yep. It’s true.
It’s a song about werewolves.

Keep listening.

Nope. Definitely not dogs.

But there’s a semi-sweet point to the song.
He’s a werewolf but he doesn’t want to be one anymore. Because love.

Hence, he won’t have to change into his monstrous form.
As long as it’s raining, he can be human and do things with his lady that he’s never gotten to do before, on account of the lycanthropy.

Someone took it even deeper and dug into African lore of shape shifters.
Making more and more sense by the minute.

Another reason to bless the rains.
It keeps him safe. Nobody hunting werewolves if you can’t find them.

It really does.

Hope it all works out with the rain and stuff, Mr. Werewolf.
