President Donald Trump on Friday took aim at former Vice President Joe Biden for the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign flub earlier in the week.
On Thursday, during a campaign speech in Iowa, Biden said “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids” before a brief pause. As people started to clap, Biden added: “Wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids. No, I really mean it. But think how we think about it.”
The outrage over the remark from the Right was not aimed at what Biden actually said, but the fact that the media brushed the gaffe aside in a way it would never have done if it had been made by a Republican.
As Trump left the White House for a fundraiser on Friday, he told reporters that “Joe is not playing with a full deck.”
“He made that comment, I said ‘woah,’” Trump continued, according to The Hill.
Trump added of Biden: “This is not somebody you can have as your president, but if he got the nomination I’d be thrilled.”
Following Biden’s remarks, media outlets defended the former vice president, who received glowing coverage under the Obama administration and is only now receiving negative attention due to his status as the Democratic frontrunner.
NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell on Friday falsely claimed that the Trump campaign edited footage of Biden’s remarks, even though the footage released by Trump rapid response director Andrew Clark included what Biden said before and after the “poor kids” statement.
The Washington Free Beacon reported that Mitchell herself provided an edited version of Biden’s statements. Mediaite reported that Mitchell accused the Trump campaign of “notably” not including “the full remarks,” even though Clark’s tweet did include the full remarks – the same portion of Biden’s speech that NBC played.
Beyond the false claim regarding Clark, Mitchell defended Biden because his gaffe came “after a long day and night at the Iowa State Fair.”
It is doubtful Mitchell would have used such a defense for a Republican.
As The Daily Wire previously reported, Biden routinely makes such “gaffes,” yet is almost always protected by the media.
In 2008, during then-candidate Barack Obama’s campaign, Biden called the future African-American president “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
Earlier this year, Biden praised former Sen. James O. Eastland (D-MS), who opposed civil rights and was a segregationist. Biden also praised former Sen. Herman Talmadge (D-GA), also a segregationist.
The list goes on.
