US is shipping the first of 500 million Pfizer Covid vaccine doses Biden pledged to donate including nearly 500,000 shots to Rwanda

The United States is shipping the first of the 500 million Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses President Joe Biden pledged to donate earlier this year.

Nearly 500,000 doses are being sent to Rwanda, through COVAX, the global vaccination program with the World Health Organization.

Of those shots, about 100,000 are part of Biden's pledge and the remaining 400,000 will be from surplus U.S. government supplies, according to a White House official.

The U.S. is shipping 488,000 doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine to Rwanda, of which about 100,000 are part of Biden's pledge to donate 500 million and the remaining doses will be from surplus U.S. government supplies

'Today, we are shipping over 488,000 doses of Pfizer to Rwanda, including the first 100,000 doses from @POTUS´ 500 million shots pledged and purchased this summer,' White House spokesman Kevin Munoz tweeted.

'This is just the beginning.'

In June, during the G7 summit, Biden  said the United States would donate 500 million doses of Pfizer's shot, made with partner BioNTech SE, and officials have said they would start shipping out in late August.

In Rwanda, COVID-19 infections are decreasing with 584 average daily reported cases, 42 percent of its peak caseload reported on July 22, according to Reuters.

However, the country has only vaccinated 4.3 percent of its total population of 12.6 million, according to Bloomberg.

Biden administration health officials have said efforts to quell the coronavirus outbreak worldwide is key to ending the pandemic and preventing future problematic COVID strains, in addition to ongoing efforts to vaccinate people in the United States.

The White House had shifted priorities to sending vaccines abroad after the U.S. vaccination campaign slowed down to fewer than 500,000 doses a day in July, down from 3.5 million per day in April.

In recent weeks, daily vaccinations have picked up with a seven-day rolling average of 765,000 as of Monday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

That's the highest figure seen since July 6, when the seven-day average sat at 865,929, CDC data show.

The U.S. will ship 200 million of the doses pledged  by the end of 2021 and the other 300 million by June 2022, according to Jeff Zients, coordinator of the president's COVID-19 task force.

'Everything is on schedule there,' he said at a White House news briefing earlier this month.

Of those doses, 75 percent will be sent to countries via COVAX and 25 percent will be shared with countries directly.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration sent 80 million doses to other nations after the president promised shots would be donated from the U.S. supply.
