FBI agents shoot and wound armed man outside CIA headquarters following hours-long standoff after he tried to drive into the Langley compound

Agents from the FBI have shot a man outside the front gates to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, after he brandished a weapon following an hours-long standoff.

Police had originally been called to CIA HQ to deal with a 'security incident.'

The man, who has not been named by officials, reportedly tried to drive into the CIA compound and was stopped, sparking an hours-long standoff.

The threat was being dealt with by the spy agency's guard force, but the FBI was also summoned to the scene.

The suspect is said to have been at the CIA security gate hours earlier, and officials had been in lengthy negotiations with him.

The FBI said agents opened fire after the man emerged from his car holding a weapon.

A statement from the Bureau said: 'The FBI is reviewing an agent-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 6pm on Monday.

'An individual involved in a security incident outside the CIA HQ emerged from his vehicle with a weapon and was engaged by law enforcement officers.

'The subject was wounded and has been transported to hospital for medical attention.'

Agents from the bureau came on scene following a report of suspicious vehicles in the area.

The person is said to have attempted to drive into the CIA grounds without any ID where he was quickly apprehended by armed guards, who control the access gates to the complex.

The main CIA buildings are set well back from the nearby roadway.

One law enforcement source told NBC News that CIA security officers had attempted to negotiate with the man to get back in his vehicle.

'In coordination with our local law enforcement partners, we are addressing a security situation just outside the secure perimeter of CIA Headquarters by our main gate.

'Our compound remains secured, and our Security Protective Officers working the incident are the only Agency personnel directly involved', an agency spokeswoman said earlier on.

The CIA has been the target of attacks in the past.

In 1993, a Pakistani man killed two CIA employees and wounded three others as they sat in their cars outside the main entrance.

Mir Aimal Kasi was on the run for four years before he was arrested, brought back to the U.S. tried and convicted. He was executed in 2002.

Other high profile sites around the nation's capital are often on high alert.

In April, a U.S. Capitol police officer was killed and a second was injured after a suspect rammed a barrier.
