Colorado man, 70, is arrested in 1982 cold-case murders of two women who had been separately hitchhiking home after work near the Rocky Mountains

A Colorado man has been detained in connection to the shooting deaths of two women who went missing on Jan. 6, 1982.

Alan Lee Phillips, 70, was arrested and is expected to be charged with murder for the killings of Annette Schnee, 21, and 29-year-old Barbara 'Bobbi Jo' Oberholtzer.

The case benefited from forensic genetic technology that investigators used last year, reported CBS4

Leads connected Phillips to the case, authorities said, but they didn't detail what those were. His mugshot hasn't been released.

Meanwhile, Phillips also faces charges of two counts of kidnapping and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to court records, ABC 7 reports.

He is currently being held at Park County Jail and expected to be formally charged on March 8, according to jail records.

Both women had been working in Breckenridge, Colorado, and were said to have been separately hitchhiking home when they went missing. Both women worked at the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range.

Oberholtzer's family would discover the woman's body the next afternoon in a snow drift just south of Breckenridge on Hoosier Pass.

Schnee's body, however, was found six months later by a boy who stumbled upon her body, fully clothed, in a creek near Fairplay.

Both victims had been shot to death.

The cases went cold after about 18 months following an investigation.

Charlie McCormick, last year, expressed hope that the case would progress forward thanks to breakthroughs from DNA collected at the crime scene.

'I have no problem working it to the bitter end,' McCormick said at the time. 'You can't walk away from it, or I can't. Haven't wanted to. Tomorrow's another day, and you got stuff to do, and you see what might happen.'

Schnee's mother, 87-year-old Eileen Franklin, had been holding onto some hope that someone would come forward with more information.

'I've been waiting,' Franklin said, 'but my time is running out.'
