Kamala Harris voices support for illegal immigrants receiving government health care

Democratic presidential contender Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said Sunday she believes that illegal immigrants should be entitled to free health care under the progressive vision of Medicare-for-all.

What did Harris say?

The California lawmaker made her comments during an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," who asked if Harris supports the language of Sen. Bernie Sanders' Medicare-for-all bill.

"The bill also says, quote: 'Every individual who's a resident of the United States is entitled to benefits for health care services under the Senate,' not every individual who's a citizen, but every individual who's a resident," Tapper explained.

"So you support giving universal health care and Medicare for all to people who are on this country illegally?" he asked.

Harris responded, "Let me just be very clear about this. I'm opposed to any policy that would deny in our country any human being from access to public safety, public education, or public health, period."

Harris adds her name to the docket of leading Democrats who support providing health care to illegal immigrants.

In addition to Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden — who is the clear frontrunner for the Democratic nomination — last week endorsed providing illegal immigrants with free health care.

Earlier in her interview with Tapper, Harris sought to clarify her position on eliminating private health insurance companies.

While she maintains support for Sanders' bill — which Tapper noted would eliminate private health insurance companies — Harris confirmed that she does not support eliminating private health insurance companies.

Rather, Harris said she supports getting "rid of all the bureaucracy."
